Un jour, peu avant No\u00ebl, une mouche se coince dans un t\u00e9l\u00e9imprimeur, provoquant une erreur de frappe dans une copie d&rsquo;un mandat d&rsquo;arr\u00eat qu&rsquo;il recevait. Cela conduit \u00e0 l&rsquo;arrestation et \u00e0 la mort lors d&rsquo;un interrogatoire trop pouss\u00e9 du cordonnier Archibald Buttle au lieu de l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur-chauffagiste ren\u00e9gat et terroriste pr\u00e9sum\u00e9 Archibald Tuttle.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Le chef de Sam est contrari\u00e9 en constatant que son service a d\u00e9bit\u00e9 les frais de l&rsquo;arrestation sur un mauvais compte. Il appelle \u00e0 la rescousse son meilleur employ\u00e9 qui n&rsquo;est autre que Sam. Ce dernier d\u00e9couvre l&rsquo;origine de l&rsquo;erreur et se propose de rendre visite \u00e0 la veuve de Buttle pour lui restituer le trop-pr\u00e9lev\u00e9 contre un formulaire d&rsquo;acquiescement. Mais \u00e0 son domicile, via un trou au plafond, il aper\u00e7oit la voisine du dessus, Jill Layton (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kim_Greist\">Kim Greist<\/a>), une conductrice de camion. Or Sam est \u00e9blouit par elle car elle ressemble trait pour trait \u00e0 la femme qui hante ses r\u00eaves r\u00e9currents. Il essaie aussit\u00f4t d&rsquo;entamer un dialogue avec elle, mais celle-ci s&rsquo;\u00e9chappe et Sam ne parvient pas \u00e0 la suivre. Les services centraux annoncent un d\u00e9lai pour r\u00e9parer tr\u00e8s lointain, ce qui d\u00e9sesp\u00e8re Sam car la situation est urgente selon lui. Tuttle (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_De_Niro\">Robert De Niro<\/a>), qui travaillait auparavant pour ces services et en est parti \u00e0 cause de son aversion pour la paperasserie fastidieuse et r\u00e9p\u00e9titive, a intercept\u00e9 l&rsquo;appel t\u00e9l\u00e9phonique de Sam et vient alors \u00e0 la rescousse de mani\u00e8re inattendue. Tuttle r\u00e9pare la climatisation de Sam, mais lorsque deux employ\u00e9s des services centraux, Spoor (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Hoskins\">Bob Hoskins<\/a>) et Dowser (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Derrick_O%27Connor\">Derrick O&rsquo;Connor<\/a>) arrivent, Sam doit les \u00e9loigner pour laisser Tuttle s&rsquo;\u00e9chapper.
