Jeune femme timide et introvertie, Sophie est totalement investie dans son service qu&rsquo;elle ex\u00e9cute \u00e0 la perfection. Cependant, certaines t\u00e2ches la mettent en difficult\u00e9 face \u00e0 ses employeurs\u00a0: elle est <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analphab%C3%A8te\">analphab\u00e8te<\/a>, ce qu&rsquo;elle cache soigneusement car c&rsquo;est pour elle une blessure narcissique intol\u00e9rable.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Tout en lui dissimulant \u00e9galement son secret, elle se lie d&rsquo;amiti\u00e9 avec Jeanne (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isabelle_Huppert\">Isabelle Huppert<\/a>), la posti\u00e8re du bourg, une jeune femme au pass\u00e9 trouble et au comportement suspect\u00a0: il s&rsquo;av\u00e8re que cette derni\u00e8re ouvre les correspondances et les paquets &#8211; au vif m\u00e9contentement de Georges Leli\u00e8vre qui le constate chaque jour &#8211; et voue une haine et une jalousie sans limite aux nantis et sp\u00e9cialement aux Leli\u00e8vre, c\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9s du spectacle qui sont dans sa ligne de mire. Les deux jeunes femmes ont vite fait de se d\u00e9couvrir une parent\u00e9 \u00e9troite&nbsp;: la premi\u00e8re a tu\u00e9 sa fillette de quatre ans, la seconde son p\u00e8re infirme et toutes deux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 accus\u00e9es de meurtre, mais ont \u00e9chapp\u00e9 \u00e0 la condamnation faute de preuves. Graduellement, Jeanne entra\u00eene Sophie dans une r\u00e9volte latente contre ses patrons. Sophie se met \u00e0 les espionner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le jour m\u00eame o\u00f9 Melinda se d\u00e9couvre enceinte de son petit ami, elle se rend compte fortuitement de l&rsquo;analphab\u00e9tisme de la domestique et lui propose na\u00efvement son aide. Fatale erreur qui va d\u00e9terminer la trag\u00e9die. Ulc\u00e9r\u00e9e, Sophie r\u00e9plique en mena\u00e7ant de d\u00e9voiler aux parents de Melinda la grossesse de leur fille si elle r\u00e9v\u00e8le son secret. La jeune fille d\u00e9cide de tout raconter \u00e0 ses parents. Son p\u00e8re, d\u00e9j\u00e0 indispos\u00e9 par la proximit\u00e9 entre sa domestique et la posti\u00e8re qu&rsquo;il ex\u00e8cre, informe imm\u00e9diatement Sophie qu&rsquo;il lui donne ses huit jours en raison de son acte de chantage.
