Evelyn Mulwray engage le d\u00e9tective priv\u00e9 Jake Gittes pour suivre son mari, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ing%C3%A9nieur\">ing\u00e9nieur<\/a> haut plac\u00e9 au <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Department_of_Water_and_Power\">d\u00e9partement des eaux de la ville<\/a> et soup\u00e7onn\u00e9 d&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adult%C3%A8re\">adult\u00e8re<\/a>. Hollis Mulwray s&rsquo;oppose \u00e0 la construction d&rsquo;un <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barrage\">barrage<\/a>, qui permettrait d&rsquo;alimenter les <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Culture_(agriculture)\">cultures<\/a> et les <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89levage\">\u00e9levages<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eau_potable\">eau potable<\/a>. Gittes finit par prendre Hollis en photo avec une autre femme. Un article racontant l&rsquo;infid\u00e9lit\u00e9 parait dans le journal, mais une femme qui se pr\u00e9sente comme Evelyn Mulwray vient se plaindre aupr\u00e8s de Gittes. Il s&rsquo;av\u00e8re que la personne qui avait engag\u00e9 Gittes n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas la vraie Evelyn Mulwray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peu de temps apr\u00e8s, Hollis Mulwray est retrouv\u00e9 mort, noy\u00e9. M\u00e9content d&rsquo;avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 et tromp\u00e9 par quelqu&rsquo;un, Gittes continue d&rsquo;enqu\u00eater sur la mort d&rsquo;Hollis et se rend compte qu&rsquo;il a \u00e9t\u00e9 assassin\u00e9 pour avoir d\u00e9couvert que de l&rsquo;eau potable est r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement rejet\u00e9e dans la mer, ce qui accentue la s\u00e9cheresse. Elle l&rsquo;engage alors pour continuer l&rsquo;enqu\u00eate. Il rend visite \u00e0 Noah Cross qui l&rsquo;engage \u00e0 son tour pour retrouver la maitresse d&rsquo;Hollis. Il d\u00e9couvre enfin que la plupart des terrains autour du projet de barrage ont \u00e9t\u00e9 achet\u00e9s peu auparavant. Il se rend enfin sur un terrain autour du projet de barrage, o\u00f9 il apprend que les fermiers suspectent que le d\u00e9partement des eaux sabote des r\u00e9servoirs d&rsquo;eau et empoisonne des puits pour les pousser \u00e0 partir. Gittes en conclut que toutes ces man\u0153uvres sont faites pour faire baisser la valeur des terrains, valeur qui augmentera lorsque le projet du barrage sera avalis\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsqu&rsquo;il enqu\u00eate sur les nouveaux propri\u00e9taires, les noms le m\u00e8nent \u00e0 des pensionnaires s\u00e9niles d&rsquo;une maison de retraite qui sont utilis\u00e9s comme pr\u00eate-noms \u00e0 leur insu pour l&rsquo;achat des terrains.
