L&rsquo;\u00e9tat de Pierre constitue la trame du film : sans aucune conscience de sa mort imminente, et na\u00efvement obs\u00e9d\u00e9 par sa \u00ab fatigue \u00bb, son monologue int\u00e9rieur tourne sans cesse autour de la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de ne surtout pas laisser tra\u00eener une lettre qui donnerait un tout autre sens \u00e0 son rapport aux autres. Cette missive ne parvient finalement pas \u00e0 sa destinataire : \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital sont remises \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9pouse de Pierre ses derni\u00e8res affaires dont la lettre. Elle est coordonn\u00e9e et r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par le cascadeur <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G%C3%A9rard_Streiff_(cascadeur)\">G\u00e9rard Streiff<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Choses_de_la_vie#cite_note-15\">13<\/a><\/sup>. Le lieu de l&rsquo;accident, la pointe du Coq, se trouve au lieu-dit <em>Villarceaux<\/em>, sur la commune de <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thoiry_(Yvelines)\">Thoiry<\/a>, dans les <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yvelines_(d%C3%A9partement)\">Yvelines<\/a>, aux croisements de la rue de la mare Agrard, de la rue de Villarceaux et de la D119 (rue des Vignettes). Le d\u00e9cor est tout \u00e0 fait fictif, fabriqu\u00e9 par la DDE \u00e0 la demande de Claude Sautet<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aide:R%C3%A9f%C3%A9rence_n%C3%A9cessaire\">[<abbr title=\"r\u00e9f\u00e9rence\">r\u00e9f.<\/abbr>\u00a0souhait\u00e9e]<\/a><\/sup> (le carrefour tel qu&rsquo;il appara\u00eet dans la sc\u00e8ne n&rsquo;est pas reconnaissable sur les lieux actuels). Les panneaux au carrefour indiquent des lieux inexistants sur place (La Noue, Thuil), le panneau quatre faces en b\u00e9ton au premier plan pr\u00e9cisant le d\u00e9partement \u00ab\u00a0Sarthe\u00a0\u00bb en rouge.
